The 4GB RAM mystery!!!

Greetings everyone. In quest to select a laptop to buy i came across a very strange fact that i would like to share with all you guys. I would like to call it the "4GB RAM mystery".
There must be many of you who have upgraded your RAM to 4GB for getting your work done quick. But there is one titsy bitsy problem. When you go and check out your RAM in system properties, you wont be able to see the complete 4GB of RAM. And astonishingly you would only see approximately 3.25GB of main memory.
So if this has happened to you, dont worry, no one has stolen your RAM. You may have this problem because ur system may be 32 bit. You would also need to understand that memory is basically addressable locations that ur system can access. And ur 32 bit operatimg system can address only 2 to the power 32 locations. This totals up to 4 billion bytes or simply 4GB.
This means that operating system can very well address ur 4GB of RAM but again one problem. Ther are some other peripherals that the operating system needs to address like vedio card and stuff which eats upto 800 MB of addressing. And this is why the system cant see around 1GB of RAM.One possible solution to this problem can be to install a 64 bit operating system. It also has some cons which we will discuss sometime later. And if you want to stick with your 32 bit OS then go with 3GB RAM.
